Targeted police action to enforce animal welfare legislation on Crete.

Recently, a series of targeted policing actions were carried out across all four regional units of the island, resulting in 87 inspections.
These checks aimed to ensure compliance with the laws governing the protection of animals.
Throughout these efforts, 31 violations were identified, highlighting several issues surrounding the welfare of domestic and companion animals.
The violations recorded included:
- Lack of valid health certificates for pets.
- Non-compliance with established welfare standards.
- Absence of electronic identification for animals.
- Various other infractions related to animal care.
These actions led to administrative fines totalling €18,400. Such measures reflect a commitment to enhancing the welfare of companion animals, including dogs, and to ensuring that owners adhere to legal responsibilities regarding their care.
The police will continue these enforcement checks with specialised teams (Animal Police) formed by the relevant police departments.
Officers involved in these operations are specifically trained to handle matters related to animal welfare.
This ongoing initiative stems from a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Ministry of the Interior, along with the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals.
The primary objective is to enhance protections for pets and stray animals across the region.
In addition to enforcement actions, local authorities are also focusing on educational programmes to inform the public about proper animal care.
These initiatives aim to foster a responsible approach to pet ownership and improve the management of stray animals.
Engagement with communities is crucial, as improper handling of animals can lead to violations of existing laws and dismay for the animal welfare community.
The inspections conducted serve not only as a means of policing but also as an opportunity to educate owners about their obligations.
Pets, especially dogs, require specific care, including regular health checks and adherence to welfare regulations.
This is where veterinarians play an essential role, providing necessary check-ups and ensuring that each animal receives the required vaccinations and treatments.
In addition to direct inspections, municipalities are encouraged to support local shelters which play a pivotal role in the management of stray animals.
These shelters often offer educational resources to the public regarding responsible pet ownership.
By collaborating with these entities, the authorities aim to create a more comprehensive protective framework for all animals.
The involvement of municipalities extends beyond just managing fines and inspection processes.
Local councils are called to engage in initiatives that enhance community awareness and promote responsible treatment of both owned and stray animals.
Strategies may include public awareness campaigns, community workshops, and direct outreach to educate the public about animal welfare and legal obligations.
Responsibility for stray animals also lies with local residents and businesses, who can assist in the greater goal of community welfare by reporting stray or neglected animals to the authorities.
Collaborations between the public and local government can foster a more humane approach to animal management, thereby reducing the number of instances of neglect and abuse.
The ongoing checks and fines associated with these inspections are essential in motivating compliance among pet owners.
Financial penalties serve as a deterrent for violations. Nevertheless, they are also crucial for encouraging a broader cultural shift towards recognising the importance of animal welfare.
Moreover, local law enforcement is tasked with maintaining an environment where animals can thrive and be cared for properly.
Continuous monitoring of the situation will allow for adjustments and improvements in how laws are implemented.
As these efforts progress, it is vital that communities stay informed and proactive in addressing any observed violations of animal welfare laws.
An engaged public, equipped with knowledge and resources, can greatly aid authorities in ensuring the rights and well-being of animals are upheld.
The collaboration between various departments and sectors highlights the collective responsibility towards protecting both domestic and stray animals.
Each inspection, each fine issued, and every educational program initiated contributes to a stronger foundation of animal welfare in the community.
