After days of calm, migrant boats arrive in Crete again

One landing yesterday on Gavdos, two today on the south coast of Crete. The migrants are being housed at the port in Heraklion and reinforced by an Italian Frontex patrol ship.

Summary of recent rescue operations

Two separate rescue operations happened off southern Crete in the early hours. Authorities safely recovered 102 migrants and refugees.

The first group turned up near Kalo Limenes—29 people from Sudan. There were two women and eleven boys between 14 and 17, all rescued and then taken by bus to Heraklion by 05:45.

In another incident near Lentas, crews rescued 73 men, including nine minors. After the rescue, everyone was taken to secure spots for ID checks and basic medical help.

The Coast Guard and other authorities pitched in for these efforts. Earlier arrivals also occurred on Gavdos island, where 57 men landed on a local beach after a boat journey.

They were first taken aboard a FRONTEX vessel. Then, they moved to a coast guard patrol boat and finally reached Paleochora port.

From there, officials escorted them to a temporary shelter in Agia, Chania. The Coast Guard says it’s still investigating this arrival.

During the Gavdos incident, the boat used by the migrants sank. Authorities seized two outboard engines.

These events really show how tough it is to manage migrant arrivals in the region. If you want more details, there’s a report on the recent rescue operations.

Fifty-seven migrants were found on Gavdos, near “Aspro Tsouni.” The Chania Coast Guard led the operation on Thursday afternoon.

During the inspection, officers arrested a 40-year-old Egyptian man. They identified him as the organiser in charge of moving the group.

Authorities charged him with illegal entry, violating the Migration Code, and endangering lives. They also seized a mobile phone, which they believe he used to coordinate the transfer.

The Coast Guard’s investigation is ongoing. They’re checking if anyone else played a role in the migrant movement network.

This case shows how maritime authorities try to disrupt smuggling operations around southern Crete. If you’re curious, you can find more on the arrest and the migrant recovery.

Arrival of 102 Migrants in Heraklion and Temporary Shelter at the Old Cold Storage

heraklion port

After the rescues off southern Crete, 102 migrants made it safely to Heraklion. They’re now staying at the old cold storage facility, at least for now.

The Coastguard coordinated the transfer, which included ID checks and urgent care. The first group, found near Kalo Livadi early in the morning, had 29 people from Sudan—two women and 11 minors aged 14 to 17.

They rode a bus to Heraklion, arriving around 5:45 am. Meanwhile, a second group of 73 men, including nine minors, was rescued near Lendas.

To keep out of the sun, they waited under olive trees and in nearby fields before authorities moved them into the city. At Heraklion port, an Italian patrol vessel working with Frontex showed up to help monitor migrant flows in the area.

The Coastguard’s ships spotted two boats off Kalo Livadi early and guided them to shore. If you want more on the arrival of the 102 migrants, there’s more info available.

Italian FRONTEX Patrol Vessel Arrives at Heraklion Harbour

An Italian patrol boat from the Economic Police sits docked at Heraklion harbour. It’ll stay for two days before heading out to patrol the southern coast of Crete.

This vessel backs up FRONTEX operations, keeping an eye on migrant flows in the region. The ship just wrapped up some coordinated rescue work, spotting and escorting two migrant boats safely to shore near Crete’s southern beaches.

Its presence really highlights the ongoing effort to tighten border security in European waters. Over the next five days, the crew plans to run regular surveillance missions, zeroing in on the tricky area south of Crete.

This whole initiative is part of a bigger push by the European Border and Coast Guard agency. They’re hoping to bump up maritime safety and keep illegal crossings in check.

If you want more details about the patrol vessel and its mission, you’ll find them linked to the Italian FRONTEX patrol vessel stationed at Heraklion.
