Newsflash from Monday, 27 October 2025:

A tense rescue operation unfolded on Sunday, October 26, in the rugged mountains of Sfakia, Crete, when a French hiker lost his way near Agia Roumeli. Thankfully, after several hours of coordinated efforts, the man was found safe and in good health.
According to Nea Kriti, the hiker became disoriented while trekking through a remote trail close to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli — a popular destination at the exit of the Samaria Gorge. When he failed to return, local authorities were alerted, triggering an immediate response from the Hellenic Fire Service.
A team of nine firefighters and one rescue vehicle was deployed to the area, navigating difficult terrain and challenging weather conditions to locate the missing man. After a methodical search, rescuers successfully reached him and escorted him to a safe location, bringing the ordeal to a relief-filled end.
The Fire Service later confirmed the successful rescue via social media, emphasizing once again the importance of proper preparation and equipment for anyone hiking in Crete’s mountainous regions. The island’s gorges and trails, while breathtakingly beautiful, can quickly become dangerous for those unfamiliar with the terrain.
This latest incident serves as a reminder to all adventurers exploring Crete’s wild landscapes: always carry navigation tools, stay hydrated, and inform others of your route before setting out.
