The New Heraklion Airport Project

The new airport near Heraklion, out in Kasteli, is one of Crete’s biggest infrastructure moves in years.

They’re planning to swap out the old Heraklion airport for this one, with way more space and a much more modern vibe.

It should handle bigger crowds and the kind of planes you don’t see every day, which should make life easier for travelers and, honestly, for everyone who lives here too.

The construction itself is massive—think runway expansions, shiny new terminals, and a bunch of support buildings popping up around the site.

All these upgrades are set to make Crete even more attractive as an international tourist destination.

It’ll open the door for more visitors and smoother movement of goods, which can only help the island’s economy.

Other Key Infrastructure Initiatives

Construction of the new BOAK

Besides the airport, Crete’s getting a bunch of other big upgrades that are shaping the island’s future.

  • Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK): This motorway runs from Kissamos in the west all the way to Agios Nikolaos in the east. They’re even talking about eventually stretching it out to Sitia.

The goal? Make driving safer, cut down on travel time, and help businesses move goods and people more easily. They’ve split the construction into three main phases, and honestly, it’s one of the biggest road projects in Europe—over 2.5 billion euros going into it.

  • Energy Link to Attica: Crete’s getting hooked up to the Greek mainland’s power grid through a new electrical interconnection.

This should mean a more reliable energy supply, a better shot at using renewables, and less dependency on fossil fuels for the island.

  • University Accommodation: The University of Crete is adding new dorms for students.

Better living conditions could make the university more appealing, and maybe even pull in more students from elsewhere.

  • Irrigation and Water Infrastructure: Projects like the Bramianos dam are in the works to help manage water for both farms and local communities.

There’s also talk of a twin dam system in Lasithi, which should help boost water supplies and support agriculture in the region.
