Christmas in Crete is anything but ordinary. This year, the island once again proved its flair for festive creativity, as Santa Claus made spectacular arrivals by air and sea in different parts of Crete, while the island’s largest Christmas tree stood proudly in one of its most iconic natural locations: the Samaria Gorge.

A High-Flying Santa in Chania

In Chania, the holiday spirit reached new heights—literally. At the Venetian Harbor, locals and visitors gathered to witness a truly unforgettable entrance as Santa Claus soared in over the water by paraglider. The dramatic arrival was part of a festive event organized by the Municipality of Chania and local organizations.

After touching down, Santa continued his journey by boat, delighting children and adults alike. The celebration featured live Christmas music by the municipal philharmonic, a DJ set, and the participation of athletes from canoe-kayak, SUP, and jet ski teams. Gifts were handed out to children, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere against the stunning backdrop of the historic harbor.

Meanwhile, in Heraklion, Santa Claus chose a faster and more adventurous route. Riding in on jet skis, Santa and his helpers made waves along the coast, turning heads and spreading holiday cheer. The sea-based arrival reflected Crete’s strong connection to the water and added an action-packed twist to traditional Christmas celebrations.

Families gathered along the shoreline to enjoy the show, proving once again that Christmas on the island is as dynamic as it is festive.

Crete’s Largest Christmas Tree at Samaria Gorge

Adding to the magic, Crete’s largest Christmas tree was set up in Omalos, at the entrance to the legendary Samaria Gorge. Surrounded by the White Mountains, the towering tree created a striking contrast between nature and festive decoration, symbolizing the unique blend of tradition and landscape that defines Christmas in Crete.

The location was not chosen by chance. Omalos and Samaria are deeply connected to Cretan identity, making the giant Christmas tree a powerful symbol of community, resilience, and celebration.

In Crete, Christmas doesn’t just arrive—it makes an entrance.
