Crete is experiencing a dramatic turn in the weather as a powerful winter system sweeps across the island, bringing heavy rain, hail, strong winds and snowfall in mountainous areas. After weeks of relatively mild conditions, winter has returned forcefully, affecting daily life and travel across the region.

Flooded Roads and Hail in Heraklion

The severe weather made its presence known early, particularly in and around Heraklion. Intense rainfall caused rapid flooding in several neighborhoods, including Agios Ioannis Chostos and Finikia, where streets were quickly submerged as water accumulated within minutes. Motorists faced difficult driving conditions, with reduced visibility and slippery roads creating hazardous situations.

In addition to heavy rain, brief but noticeable hailstorms were reported in parts of the prefecture. Although the hail did not last long and melted almost immediately, it added to the intensity of the weather event and surprised residents unaccustomed to such conditions.

Snowfall Transforms the Mountains

While cities dealt with rain and flooding, higher elevations across Crete saw snowfall. In mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, snow briefly covered the ground, transforming the landscape into a striking winter scene. In some locations, snow accumulation was enough to create icy conditions, increasing the risk of frost, particularly during the early morning and nighttime hours.

According to meteorological forecasts, snow is expected to continue intermittently in the mountains through Tuesday, with the possibility of reaching lower elevations depending on wind strength and temperatures.

Strong Winds and Falling Temperatures

The cold front has also brought a sharp drop in temperatures across the island. Daytime highs in urban centers such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos are expected to range between 9°C and 15°C, with significantly colder conditions at night. In mountainous regions, temperatures may fall to near or below freezing.

Strong northerly winds, locally reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort, are intensifying the feeling of cold and affecting maritime travel, especially in the Aegean and the Cretan Sea.

Travel Warnings and Safety Advice

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas, remain alert for icy roads and follow guidance from local authorities. Poor visibility, water-covered streets and strong winds continue to pose risks across the island.

A Brief but Intense Winter Episode

Meteorologists describe this cold spell as intense but relatively short-lived, with the most severe conditions expected to ease by midweek. However, brief relapses of wintry weather cannot be ruled out in the coming days.

For now, Crete is firmly under winter’s grip—an impressive reminder of nature’s power, with rain-soaked cities below and snow-dusted mountains above.
