Panic on the BOAK as Driver Intentionally Crashes into Vehicles

A shocking incident unfolded on the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) on Monday morning, when a driver in a black Chevrolet deliberately rammed into multiple vehicles traveling between Prassas and Gouves, near Heraklion (source: Daynight.gr).

According to reports, the man — later identified as a 32-year-old Albanian national — caused a series of intentional collisions that left at least eight vehicles damaged, including rental cars carrying tourists. Witnesses described scenes of panic and fear, as some cars veered off course, crashing into guardrails or central barriers.

“He Wanted to Kill Us,” Say Shocked Drivers

One eyewitness, who was driving near the former U.S. Base in Gournes, recounted the terrifying moments when the Chevrolet struck his car at high speed around 11:15 a.m.

“He hit me from behind with incredible force. I saw his hood shaking as he came closer. After the first impact, my car hit the divider — and then he rammed me again,” the driver told local reporters.

The witness said he was the seventh driver to be hit and that the crash could have had tragic consequences if not for the vehicle’s safety systems absorbing much of the impact.

Suspect Arrested After Attempted Escape

After the final collision, the suspect’s car reportedly blew a tire and ended up in a roadside ditch. The man then abandoned the vehicle and continued on foot along the old national road toward Heraklion.

Police officers from the BOAK Traffic Department and Heraklion Police quickly launched a search operation. The suspect was located and arrested in the Kokkini Hani area shortly afterward.

Authorities are investigating possible motives, including whether the driver was under the influence of substances or suffering from psychological distress at the time of the attacks.

Tourists Among the Victims

Several of the vehicles struck were rental cars carrying foreign tourists — including a family with young children who were left in shock but fortunately uninjured.
Local officials emphasized that, while there were no serious injuries, the deliberate nature of the collisions has raised serious safety concerns about road behavior and mental health awareness among drivers.

Police Investigation Ongoing

The Hellenic Police have confirmed the man’s arrest and are expected to release further details following his interrogation. The damaged vehicles were removed from the scene, and traffic on the BOAK returned to normal later in the afternoon.

Residents and officials alike have expressed relief that the incident did not result in fatalities — but also outrage that such a dangerous act could occur on one of Crete’s busiest highways.
