Significantly tougher penalties for domestic violence
Newsflash from Thursday, November 21, 2024
In an important step towards combating domestic violence, Greece has just announced stricter penalties for offenders. The government is taking decisive action against domestic violence and the most important changes are due to come into force in the next few days.
What is changing:
– Extension of the temporary police detention period from 48 hours to 5 days
– Possible additional temporary detention pending trial
– Faster court proceedings for cases of domestic violence
The Minister for Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, explained that these changes are aimed at creating a safer environment for victims and deterring potential perpetrators.
The figures speak for themselves:
– 2024 (11 months): 18,978 reported offenders
– 2023 (full year): 10,382 reported offenders
This sharp rise is not only due to the increase in violence, but also to the fact that more victims are finding the courage to report it.
What does this mean for us?
Whether you live in Crete or are visiting, these changes emphasise the island’s commitment to safety. If you or someone you know is affected by domestic violence, help is available.
Save this emergency number: 100 (police). For support and information contact the SOS helpline on 15900.
Stay safe and help make Crete a welcoming place for all!

Current Status and Safety Measures at Samaria Gorge
Newsflash from Monday, October 21, 2024
The Samaria National Park is currently open to visitors through both its entrances as of Monday, 21 October. The Organisation for Natural Environment and Climate Change (ONENCC) continues to enforce a daily visitor cap of 1,200 people to manage the flow of tourists and maintain the park’s ecological balance.
For organised groups, electronic tickets are now mandatory to prevent delays and potential cancellations. This system aims to streamline the entry process and ensure a more efficient experience for all visitors.
The park’s management retains the right to adjust visitor movement within the Samaria Gorge as deemed necessary. This flexibility allows for prompt responses to any unforeseen circumstances that may affect visitor safety or the gorge’s ecological health.
A team of experts, led by Professor Efthymios Lekkas, is conducting a four-day inspection of the area. This comprehensive assessment aims to evaluate current conditions and explore potential improvements to enhance safety measures for the thousands of visitors the gorge attracts.
The inspection team’s itinerary includes visits to Heraklion on Monday and Chania on Tuesday. Their findings will be crucial in determining any necessary interventions to upgrade safety protocols within the national park.
Recent weather conditions have been favourable, with no rainfall reported in the area over the weekend. This dry spell has allowed for the reopening of the southern entrance to the gorge by residents of Agia Roumeli. Approximately 40 nature enthusiasts have already taken advantage of this opportunity to explore the reopened section.
The ONENCC is expected to develop new initiatives focused on enhancing visitor safety throughout the gorge. These measures will likely be implemented based on the results of the ongoing expert assessment and will prioritise the well-being of all who venture into this remarkable natural wonder.
Visitors planning a trip to Samaria Gorge should remain aware of the following key points:
– Daily visitor limit: 1,200 people
– Electronic tickets: Required for organised groups
– Potential restrictions: May be implemented at short notice
– Ongoing safety assessment: May lead to new measures
The Samaria Gorge, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and unique ecosystem, continues to be a popular destination for nature lovers. As authorities work to balance conservation efforts with visitor access, tourists are encouraged to stay informed about the latest guidelines and respect all safety measures in place.
The current inspection and potential forthcoming changes underscore the commitment to preserving this natural treasure whilst ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all who visit. As the situation evolves, visitors should remain flexible and prepared for any updates to park regulations or access.

Crete shaken but not stirred: How to sleep through a magnitude 3.2 quake
Newsflash from Saturday, October 12, 2024
On Friday afternoon (11 October), an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale occurred 7 kilometres southwest of Neapoli in Lasithi.
Did anyone feel the ground move? If not, you are not alone! Many residents of the region around Neapoli did not even notice the 3.2 magnitude earthquake (including the author as he was finishing an article on his computer), which occurred just 7 kilometres from the town.
While small earthquakes are not uncommon in Greece, this one was close enough to put a strain on some nerves – and crockery! But for many locals, it was just another gentle shake from Mother Nature.
So what’s the secret to sleeping soundly during an earthquake? Some say it’s all about having the right mattress. Some mattresses (or office chairs) are particularly good at absorbing energy, much like earthquake-proof buildings!
If you do wake up during an earthquake, remember: stay in bed, lie face down and protect your head with a pillow.
Once you’ve been on the island long enough, earthquakes are about as exciting as a stormy swell for a sailor on a ship – you won’t even notice them and will only find out about them from the newspapers next day!
Major Progress on Crete’s BOAK Highway Project
Newsflash from Saturday, October 5, 2024
Exciting developments are underway on Crete’s Northern Road Axis (BOAK)! Construction has begun on the crucial 22.5-kilometer central section between Hersonissos and Neapoli, marking a significant step forward in the island’s infrastructure upgrade.
But that’s not all – the eastern section from Neapoli to Agios Nikolaos is also seeing major activity. This vital stretch is being widened into a modern 4-lane highway, promising smoother travels for both locals and visitors alike.
However, further obstructions and speed restrictions (to 50 km/h) are now to be expected!
These developments are part of an ambitious project to create Europe’s longest motorway right here on Crete. The BOAK will revolutionize transportation across the island, boosting both the economy and quality of life.
Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project!
