From 27 to 30 August 2025, the 5th Open Air Festival in the Fortezza Fortress of Rethymno.

Event Details and Lineup
Rethymno Rocks! Festival is back for its fifth round in 2025. It runs from 27 to 30 August, right on the historic Fortezza Castle Hill in Rethymno, Crete, Greece.
This open-air festival leans into rock and metal, but you’ll catch a pretty wide mix of sounds. The organizers don’t seem to shy away from variety, which is refreshing.
They kick things off with a free entrance day on Wednesday, 27 August. The spot? Saint Paul Bastion inside the Fortezza Castle, just a stone’s throw from the main entrance.
That first night, you’ll hear Treha Sektori from Paris, iNsCissorS from Athens, and Anglachel out of Heraklion. Not a bad way to get things rolling.
From Thursday through Saturday, the action shifts to the main stage. Thursday brings 1000mods, a heavy Greek rock band finally coming back to Rethymno after a whopping 14 years.
Kalte Nacht, Automaton, and Gnaal join them, each adding their own flavor. The lineup feels carefully curated, but not too predictable.
Friday’s headliner is Moonspell, the Portuguese legends known for their dark metal vibe. They’re celebrating 30 years since their debut album Wolfheart—they’ll play the whole thing live, plus some deep cuts.
Supporting them, you’ll get Project Renegade (Greek alternative metal), SixForNine, and UK thrash icons Onslaught. That’s a stacked night if you ask me.
Saturday closes things out with Primordial from Ireland, who blend traditional sounds with extreme metal. Firewind, Triumpher, and Toxic Terror will all hit the stage too, bringing serious energy for the final night.

Location and Setting

The Fortezza Castle Hill really sets the scene for this festival. There’s something about the mix of crumbling old walls and wild, rocky views that just works for live music.
Saint Paul Bastion, where they hold the opening day, is a cool part of the fortress. It adds a bit of history to the whole thing, which I think makes the experience stand out.
Crete itself has a lot going for it—history, scenery, and that feeling you get when you’re somewhere special. Rethymno pulls in a crowd that’s all about the music, but you can tell they love the location, too.
Musical Styles and Audience
Rethymno Rocks! covers a lot of ground: heavy rock, alternative metal, thrash, doom, power metal, and even some darkwave. You’ll hear veterans like Moonspell and Onslaught, but also newer acts like Project Renegade and iNsCissorS who are making a name for themselves.
The crowd’s a mix of locals and travelers who are here for the music, but also the vibe. The festival stands out by mixing free and ticketed days, which honestly makes it feel more open and welcoming.
Tickets for the other days can be found on the official website rethymnorocks.gr.
Additional Notes
- Enthusiasts with deep roots in the metal and rock scenes organize the festival.
- Fortezza Castle Hill sets the stage, literally, with several venues tucked inside the historic area.
- The lineup feels pretty balanced, mixing international stars with Greek and regional talent.
- Free entrance on opening day, and for some groups, really keeps things inclusive.
