Update: Melidochori and Voria Evacuated as Flames Rage

A major wildfire is currently sweeping through the Melidochori area in Heraklion, Crete, prompting urgent evacuations and a massive emergency response. Authorities have ordered residents and visitors in both Melidochori and Voria to leave immediately as firefighters battle rapidly spreading flames under extremely challenging conditions.
Evacuation Orders Issued via Emergency Alert
Two emergency alerts were sent through Greece’s 112 system. The first, issued shortly after the fire broke out early Wednesday afternoon, warned people in the area to remain on alert and follow official instructions. A second message later ordered a precautionary evacuation of Melidochori and Voria, directing people toward Charaki and Damania for safety.
Massive Firefighting Operation Underway
The wildfire ignited around 13:30 in an area of low vegetation but quickly intensified due to strong, shifting winds. These conditions have caused the fire to change direction frequently, creating new fronts and making containment efforts significantly more difficult.
At least 85 firefighters are currently deployed, supported by:
- 5 specialized ground teams (EMODE units)
- 19 fire engines
- Volunteers
- Water tankers and heavy machinery from local municipalities
Aerial firefighting efforts are also extensive, with multiple helicopters and aircraft conducting continuous water drops to slow the spread of the blaze.

Difficult Terrain and Dangerous Conditions
The fire is burning through a ravine, making access difficult for ground crews. Narrow dirt roads limit the movement of larger firefighting vehicles, forcing responders to rely on smaller units and close-range operations.
Firefighters are working dangerously close to the flames in some areas to protect nearby infrastructure. While certain facilities were briefly at risk, reports indicate they were saved thanks to rapid intervention.
No Damage Reported So Far
As of now, authorities have not reported damage to homes, buildings, or agricultural properties. However, the situation remains highly volatile due to unpredictable winds and ongoing flare-ups.
High Fire Risk Across Crete
The wildfire comes amid a very high fire risk (Level 4) across all of Crete. Civil Protection authorities have placed the island on high alert, warning that current weather conditions are highly conducive to fast-moving fires.
Residents are strongly urged to avoid any outdoor activities that could spark fires, including burning vegetation, using machinery that produces sparks, or discarding lit cigarettes.
Authorities Urge Vigilance
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and stress the importance of following evacuation orders and safety instructions. Anyone who spots smoke or fire is urged to immediately contact the Fire Service by calling 199.
The firefighting operation remains ongoing, with emergency services working around the clock to bring the blaze under control.
