Alarm in Crete: Heavy Rainfall, Storms, and Hailstorms on the Way

Heavy, persistent rain
Heavy, persistent local rain last turned streets here into small watercourses.

Crete is bracing for a new wave of severe weather, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms expected to hit the island over the next 48 hours. Authorities and residents are on high alert as the Civil Protection Service has activated emergency preparedness measures to deal with potential risks.

What to Expect

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), the most intense weather phenomena will affect Western Crete (Chania and Rethymno) starting from Thursday afternoon, October 2, 2025, and lasting into the night.

️ Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across western regions.
️ Hailstorms possible in localized areas.
Winds shifting from southerly (4–6 Beaufort) to northwesterly, reaching up to 7 Beaufort in some areas.
️ Temperatures dropping from 24–26°C to lower levels as the front passes.

In Eastern Crete (Heraklion and Lasithi), the weather will remain fair in the morning, but clouds will build by midday, followed by local showers and storms overnight.
Authorities on Alert

All regional services and technical teams have been placed on increased readiness to respond to flooding, fallen trees, and other emergencies. Residents are urged to follow official safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel during peak weather conditions.
Safety Tips for Residents

Authorities recommend:

✅ Check and clear drains and gutters around your property.
✅ Secure loose objects outdoors that could be swept away by strong winds.
✅ Avoid underground spaces during heavy rainfall.
✅ Do not attempt to cross flooded roads by car or on foot.
✅ Keep essential supplies (water, food, flashlight, power bank) at home.

Looking Ahead

The severe weather is expected to gradually ease by the weekend, with improving conditions from Friday afternoon onwards. However, local showers may persist, especially in northern and eastern Crete.
