First Case of West Nile Virus in Crete Confirmed

Mosquito sucks blood
Mosquito sucks blood on human skin

Health authorities in Heraklion are on high alert after a 66-year-old man was diagnosed with West Nile virus. What makes this case especially concerning? He had not traveled the island abroad, meaning it’s a local transmission.

Immediate measures are underway:

Door-to-door mosquito spraying in the affected area
Traps set to test local mosquito populations
Public awareness campaigns

Remember: The virus spreads through mosquito bites, not from person to person. Most people don’t get sick, but those over 50 or with weakened immunity are at higher risk for serious illness.

Protect yourself:

✔️ Use mosquito repellent

✔️ Eliminate standing water around your home

✔️ Wear long sleeves outdoors in the evening

Let’s all stay informed and protected. ️

Sunbeds & Trash Kill Baby Sea Turtles on Sitia Beach

Newsflash from Tuesday, September 9, 2025

This summer, tragedy struck #Sitia: newborn sea turtles never made it to the sea. Why? Because sun loungers left overnight and piles of trash blocked the mothers from nesting and trapped hatchlings in debris .

➡️ Only 1 nest was recorded on Sitia’s main beach—down from dozens in previous years. Volunteers even found dead hatchlings tangled among garbage.

Sea turtles are not just beautiful creatures—they’re vital for healthy seas . Their disappearance is a warning sign for our environment and our future.

It’s time we all take responsibility: keep beaches clean, respect nesting zones, and demand enforcement of the law.

Greece’s Road Crisis: 1 Life Lost Every 14 Hours

Newsflash from Monday, September 1, 2025

Bad weather front
This is why Crete has the highest number of traffic fatalities per capita in Europe: despite heavy rain, speed limits and overtaking bans, there are still enough reckless drivers who speed and overtake even in heavy rain!

Shocking new data reveals that Greece now ranks 3rd in Europe for deadly traffic accidents, behind only Romania and Bulgaria.

Every 14 hours, a family loses a loved one on Greek roads.

Experts point to lack of proper driver education, weak enforcement, and a culture of impunity as key causes. Meanwhile, the EU’s goal is to cut road deaths by 50% by 2030.

This isn’t just about numbers — it’s about lives, families, and futures cut short.

Drive safe. Respect the rules. Speak up for road safety. Together, we can change this.

Near the quiet village of Vrouchas in Agios Nikolaos, plans are underway for a massive five-star luxury resort:
31 buildings, 159 rooms, 374 beds
€74 million investment
Seasonal operation for high-income tourism
While the developers promise “green practices” and economic benefits, many locals and nature lovers worry:
⚠️ Will this change the character of Vrouchas forever?
⚠️ Can the fragile landscape handle large-scale construction?
⚠️ Is Crete moving toward sustainable tourism — or just more concrete?
Crete doesn’t need more mega-resorts. It needs protection of its natural beauty, support for local communities, and tourism that respects the land and people.
