Yesterday, on Sunday, 15 June 2025, we explored the water level of the Aposelemi Dam and the impressive Roza Gorge near the Lassithi Plateau.

Aposelemie Dam:
Roza Gorge (Hersonissos)
The Roza Gorge is located just before the Lassithi Plateau in the municipality of Chersonissos on the north coast of Crete, east of Heraklion, the island’s capital. This gorge is part of the natural landscape of the surrounding area and offers a picturesque, less touristy hiking experience compared to some of the larger gorges on the island.
Special features:
– Length and difficulty: The gorge is relatively short and suitable for a moderately difficult hike, making it accessible to most visitors with average fitness levels.
– Landscape: The gorge is characterised by narrow rock passages, lush vegetation and small streams, especially in the rainier months. It offers a peaceful walk in nature with the opportunity to observe the local flora and fauna.
– Access: The gorge can be reached from nearby villages or from hiking trails that start near Hersonissos. It is a popular spot for locals and visitors who want to escape the crowds at the beach.
Tips for visiting:
– Wear comfortable hiking boots with good traction.
– Bring water and sunscreen, especially in summer.
– The best time to visit is in spring or autumn, when the weather is milder and the gorge is greener.
– Check local conditions or guidebooks for information about trail conditions.
