map fire chania 270725

Situation Report:

The fire in the Chania region is still burning, mostly around Temenia in the municipality of Kandanos-Selino.

Firefighting teams are struggling with tough terrain and stubborn winds, which keep the blaze alive on several fronts.

More than 200 firefighters are on the ground, along with 40 fire engines and a few specialised units.

Two helicopters buzz overhead, dropping water and doing their best to keep the flames at bay.

Local volunteers haven’t just watched—they’ve jumped in, bringing extra vehicles and people to help out.

Seven settlements close to the fire have evacuated as a precaution.

Residents keep a close eye on things, since the danger hasn’t really passed.

The fire has already destroyed four houses and a church.

Cars, olive groves, beehives, and livestock have also taken a hit, which honestly just stings for everyone living there.

Temenia, Prodromi, Skafi, Anydro, Asfendiles, Achladiakes, and Agios Giannis are all affected.

The flames have even reached up into the mountains near Paleochora, Armos, and Azogyres—so the active fire perimeter is pretty broad right now.

Critical infrastructure hasn’t been spared.

Power and phone services went down in several places after the fire damaged networks.

People forced to leave their homes have found temporary shelter in school buildings, like the gymnasium in Paleochora.

Local government and private companies have pitched in with machinery and water trucks, trying to help tamp down the flames.

The fire has chewed through a lot of forest and farmland.

We don’t know the full extent of the damage yet—official reports should come once things settle down, but right now, crews are still fighting hard across the region’s tricky landscape.

Key points:

  • Fire stretches across several locations; some fronts still active.
  • Over 200 firefighters and 40 vehicles are in action.
  • Two helicopters are working on aerial drops.
  • Volunteers are out there with extra hands and equipment.
  • Seven nearby communities have evacuated.
  • Four homes and one church lost; damage to vehicles, olive groves, and livestock.
  • Power and communications have gone out in some spots.
  • Evacuated residents are staying in local schools for now.
  • Authorities and private groups are sending extra resources.
  • Firefighting is ongoing, and the landscape isn’t making it easy.
  • They’re still figuring out the full damage.
