On certain days every year, you can walk into public museums, monuments, and archaeological sites in Greece without paying a cent. These spots are managed by the Ministry of Culture—think big names like the Acropolis Museum.

The dates for free entry aren’t random. They line up with some pretty significant cultural and national events, like:

  • 6th March, Memorial Day of Melina Mercouri
  • 18th April, International Day for Monuments
  • 18th May, the International Museum Day
  • The last weekend of September, European Heritage Days
  • 28th October, National Holiday

Besides those, there’s also free entry on the first and third Sundays from November through March. That’s a nice little bonus for winter wanderers.

Extended Opening Hours and Higher Ticket Prices for Archaeological Sites in Lasithi

Fortress Spinalonga
Fortress Spinalonga

In Lasithi, several archaeological sites and museums have stretched their opening hours and, well, bumped up their ticket prices. They’ve brought in extra seasonal staff to help things run more smoothly during busy periods.

Spinalonga is now open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, but the ticket will set you back €20. Over at the Minoan Palace of Zakros, it’s the same extended hours, with tickets now at €10.

Other sites—like Lato, Gournia, Itanos, Palekastro, Mochlos, Petras, the Basilica of Ierapetra, and the Venetian mansion of Etia—stick to 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. No changes there, at least for now.

The Byzantine Church of Panagia Kera in Kritsa is open a bit less, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Museums in Agios Nikolaos and Sitia, plus the Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra, run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

The Diktaion Cave at Psychro (Lasithi plateau) is closed for repairs this season, and when it’s back, tickets will jump to €15. The Archaeological Collection of Neapoli isn’t open this year either—renovation work is underway.

General Rules and Exceptions

  • You can’t enter after 20 minutes before closing—so don’t cut it too close.
  • Sites are closed on public holidays like May Day.
  • On holidays such as Whit Monday, 15 August, and 28 October, they’re open as usual during regular hours.
